Utrecht, 2 February 2010. Prof. Ekko van Ierlan (Wageningen University) thinks that the public debate on the World Bank Enviroment Strategy turned into a very productive afternoon. He stresses the importance of an ecosystem based approach for economic development and he hopes this concept will be integrated in the final World Bank environment strategy.

Street Protest against the World Bank's involvement in the United Nations Climate Change processes. the World Bank is a major investor in oil, mining and gas, and building infrastructure for the global fossil fuel economy. so it is worse than hypocritical for it to set itself up as the body to channel international assistance finance for responding and adapting to climate change.

Introducing with indymedia.org, coverage of the protests in September 2000 against the IMF and the World Bank conference in Prague. Interviews with activists and campaigners from the southern hemisphere give damning criticism of the IMF and World Bank policies as the film charts the preparations for the day of action in Prague, the day itself and its aftermath.

The film focuses on the lives of the villagers of Barskon, a remote settlement in the west of Kyrgyzstan that, since 1997, has also been home to a controversial gold mine. In 1998, nearly two tons of cyanide spilled from the gold mine operations, poisoning the nearby river and leaving several people dead and hundreds seeking medical treatment.

Neeraj Negi, evaluation officer for the World Bank, was a member of an evaluation team that studied macrodevelopment issues that contributed to the adoption of the new resource allocation framework by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
